What We Do

The Tang Institute is a center for teaching and learning at Phillips Academy. We work closely with instructors at Andover to help them reimagine learning and translate insights from educational research into their classroom practices. This work directly supports our students, who benefit from energized teachers and new pedagogical approaches.

Our Work:

  • Each year, the Institute welcomes 10 to 12 Tang Fellows to work on projects of their choosing that are meant to advance teaching and learning at Andover with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary, collaborative work.
  • Current and past fellows have made advances in education technology by leveraging enabling technologies in concert with projects like EduCompass, the ethi{CS} project, and Mapping the Haitian Revolution.
  • External partnerships bring together thought leaders from around the world to present to students and fellows on various topics such as artificial intelligence, assessment, the future of learning, and sustainable development goals, to name a few.
  • Internal collaboration across departments at Phillips Academy are essential to the Tang Institute’s mission. These partnerships serve as valuable means for curricular, departmental, and pedagogical renewal within Phillips Academy. As such, the Tang Institute is responsible for initiating the Learning in the World program, Feedback First, BIO 100, and Andover math problems, among many other programs essential to Phillips Academy’s leadership in secondary education.
  • The Tang Institute is committed to gatherings and events like mindfulness sessions and student presentations. As well, educators from near and far gather through Institute programs to explore, refine, and share impactful teaching and learning practices.
  • Over the past six years, advancing Creative Assessment Practices has been foundational to the Tang Institute’s work. Both understanding the impact of projects and understanding the impact of those projects on student learning. Some projects committed to creative assessment include Action Research, Feedback First, and BIO 100.

Launched in 2014, the Tang Institute was founded to catalyze innovative approaches to teaching and learning, with the goal of having lasting impact on campus and beyond. We remain grateful to Oscar Tang ’56 for his significant foundational gift.
